law and order situations and
countering insurgency, terrorism
and militancy. In the present scheme
of things CRPF is the premier
central police organization which is
handling these tasks. There is very
little faithful chronicling of incidents
as it is feared that even honest
mistakes would mean visitation
of punishments. In the process
shortcomings are glossed over and
many valuable lessons are lost for
ever. There is no better method of
learning than analyzing mistakes
as well as adopting successful
practices. Actually preparing
realistic case studies, which involve
a lot of effort and expertise, would
go a long way not only in improving
its own performance but would
also be of great help to other police
organizations in the centre and the
states.
CRPF is arguably the largest
armed police organization in the
world with nearly 226 battalions
and various other units. The
personnel work under very harsh
and demanding conditions. Being
a highly mobile force they face
considerable disruption in their
family commitments. Although
every effort is made to provide
basic living comforts at their work
stations but conditions are not
always ideal. In most deployments
they face real danger, even to
their lives. Taking these factors
into consideration the need for a
proactive, generous and protective
role of the officers is obvious.
This would mean a conscious and
close interaction of the officers
and men. There is an established
actuarial method by which realistic
leave, training and medical leave
reserves can be calculated. It is
an unfortunate fact that financial
considerations almost always
prevail and lead to minimizing the
actual numbers required so that
the physical, emotional and social
needs of personnel, especially in
the lower ranks, are met in terms
of adequate leave, family living
accommodations and dependent’s
education etc. Considerable more
resources and attention needs to
be given to these aspects.
The Central Reserve Police Force
has always shown commendable
capability of adapting its profile
and work habits to master the
escalating and varying challenges
thrown at them during the last
more than seven decades. With
there capacity to scan the horizons
and anticipating the changes in the
Internal Security scenario they will
more than justify their status as the
“Peace Keepers of the Nation”.
