But no one would have even imagined that an organisation which was born as a tiny force of one battalion constituted purely on religious composition, would grow in the course of 73 years into a mighty and most dependable internal security force of India. TRIBUTES FROM LEADERSHIP If we recall some of the tributes paid to the force by some of the former Presidents and Prime Ministers of this great nation from time to time, then the nation would truly be proud of this most versatile and multi dimensional force. Some such tributes are quoted below:- “ The hallmark of the CRPF has been a high level of discipline, professional competence and a tradition of service to the community”. 7 7 Central Reserve Police Force 73 Years Central of Reserve Dedicated Police Service Force 73 Years of Glorious Existence “Central Reserve Police Force is the oldest and one of its own kind of security force in the country, which has been used everywhere and in every way”.
“The CRPF fulfilled an essential need which was to have a force which may comprise people from different states, speaking different languages and still working together”. “We have observed that whenever the CRPF has gone, the people have reposed confidence in it and they (CRPF personnel) too have worked with great courage and dedication”. “The CRPF men have shed blood in every part of the country in service of the nation. The challenges faced by the CRPF and sacrifices made, have given it an identity. The CRPF has become symbol of our unity and integrity”. “CRPF has earned public confidence not once but again and again. We are sure that the CRPF will stand the test of time and will continue to strive to maintain the integrity, glory and honour of the country”. “The country would always remember the martyrs of CRPF with honour for the sacrifices they had made in defending unity and integrity of the nation. The future of the country is safe in the hands of Central Reserve Police Force”. POLICING – AN ARDUOUS TASK Policing is the most difficult and thankless job among all the functions of the government. It is so all over the world. Police has to face the consequences of the omissions and commissions of the various functionaries in the government. When political parties fail to fulfill the promises made during the elections, when officers at various levels in various departments annoy or frustrate the public by their highhandedness, indifference or omissions and commissions, it is the police which has to face the brunt of the public anger. The police being charged with responsibility to maintain order, protect VIPs, preserve the integrity and security of the society and the nation and implement and enforce laws and lawful orders of the government of the day, are placed in an unenviable position. Very often when such negative role is played again and again, naturally the police comes to be disrespected and disliked. People forget the initial anger and aversion against various authorities which pushes them face to face against the law. They only remember the treatment they received at the hands of the law enforcement agencies. The frustration and anger of the public gets deflected towards the police, who invariably had no role in the omissions and commissions and failings of the various departments and authorities. The main grievance is forgotten and the campaign starts against the police. Thus, the police are necessarily forced to play the role of shock absorber of the government authorities. Someone in the society has to play this unenviable role and invariably it is the police which is called upon to perform this difficult, thankless and risky job. Their job becomes more difficult and unpopular when sufficient authority, power and status is not given by the laws to the forces.
