speaking different languages and still
working together”.

personnel) too have worked with great

POLICING – AN ARDUOUS TASK
Policing is the most difficult and thankless
job among all the functions of the
government. It is so all over the world.
Police has to face the consequences
of the omissions and commissions
of the various functionaries in the
government. When political parties
fail to fulfill the promises made
during the elections, when officers at
various levels in various departments
annoy or frustrate the public by their
highhandedness, indifference or
omissions and commissions, it is the
police which has to face the brunt
of the public anger. The police being
charged with responsibility to maintain
order, protect VIPs, preserve the
integrity and security of the society
and the nation and implement and
enforce laws and lawful orders of the
government of the day, are placed in an
unenviable position. Very often when
such negative role is played again and
again, naturally the police comes to be
disrespected and disliked. People forget
the initial anger and aversion against
various authorities which pushes them
face to face against the law. They only
remember the treatment they received
at the hands of the law enforcement
agencies. The frustration and anger of
the public gets deflected towards the
police, who invariably had no role in
the omissions and commissions and
failings of the various departments
and authorities. The main grievance
is forgotten and the campaign starts
against the police. Thus, the police
are necessarily forced to play the role
of shock absorber of the government
authorities.
Someone in the society has to play this
unenviable role and invariably it is the
police which is called upon to perform
this difficult, thankless and risky job.
Their job becomes more difficult and
unpopular when sufficient authority,
power and status is not given by the
laws to the forces.
