a multitude of serpenls that infested the marshes of<br />
Lerna in Greece. These Hercules is said to have<br />
extirpated by setting fire to the reeds in which they<br />
lodged. The word is sometimes applied, as an<br />
epithet, to that which is productive of a multiplicity<br />
of evils. Thus, an outrageous mob is figurative])'<br />
termed" a hydra-headed monster."<br />
