5.3.2 Cultivation <strong>of</strong> In Vitro Excysted Trophozoites.<br />

Table 5.3 summarises the results <strong>of</strong> all <strong>culture</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiates derived from <strong>in</strong> <strong>vitro</strong><br />

excystations.<br />

The behaviour <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>vitro</strong> excysted trophozoites was not consistent <strong>in</strong> <strong>culture</strong>.<br />

Some survived for up to six hours, rounded up <strong>and</strong> died. Others survived for 12,<br />

24 or 72 hours or as long as 9 days <strong>in</strong> <strong>culture</strong> but gradually died. The majority <strong>of</strong><br />

these never adhered to the <strong>culture</strong> tube surface but swam around vigorously <strong>and</strong><br />

later became sluggish. A few attached to the glass but rema<strong>in</strong>ed as s<strong>in</strong>gle cells at<br />
