on education <strong>of</strong> children <strong>and</strong> adults about hygiene <strong>and</strong> sanitation. Equally<br />

essential is the need to resolve the present taxonomic confusion <strong>in</strong> order to<br />

facilitate effective epidemiological control when accuracy <strong>in</strong> species <strong>and</strong> stra<strong>in</strong><br />

def<strong>in</strong>ition has been achieved. The extent <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terspecies transmission (<strong>in</strong> order to<br />

elucidate the role played by animals <strong>in</strong> transmission <strong>of</strong> <strong>giardia</strong>sis to humans) also<br />

requires thorough <strong>in</strong>vestigation. These remarks emphasise the crucial need to fully<br />

underst<strong>and</strong> the pathogenesis/virulence factors <strong>of</strong> these organisms.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, several studies have revealed marked genetic diversity among isolates.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> these studies illustrate that variability exists <strong>in</strong> many aspects <strong>of</strong> Giardia<br />

<strong>in</strong>fection, such as drug susceptibility, <strong>in</strong>fectivity patterns, susceptibility to<br />

enzymatic lysis <strong>and</strong> antigenicity. In view <strong>of</strong> the fact that many cell-cell <strong>in</strong>teractions<br />

occur at the surface (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g host-parasite <strong>in</strong>teractions), it rema<strong>in</strong>s to be shown<br />

whether the surface antigenic variations have any association with virulence<br />

determ<strong>in</strong>ants dur<strong>in</strong>g the natural course <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>fections <strong>in</strong> vivo.<br />

1.9 Study objective<br />

Evidently, <strong>giardia</strong>sis still rema<strong>in</strong>s a poorly understood gastro<strong>in</strong>test<strong>in</strong>al <strong>in</strong>fection.<br />

Furthermore, Giardia is not a fully def<strong>in</strong>ed organism at present. The environment,<br />

host factors <strong>and</strong> the parasite cyst <strong>in</strong>teract to propagate <strong>giardia</strong>sis. A thorough<br />

underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the organism requires more <strong>in</strong>-depth knowledge <strong>of</strong> its biology<br />

<strong>and</strong> biochemistry. Epidemiological <strong>in</strong>tervention to break the life-cycle, preventive<br />

control measures <strong>and</strong> identification <strong>of</strong> prospective drug target sites <strong>and</strong> vacc<strong>in</strong>e<br />

design would be facilitated by a more comprehensive knowledge <strong>of</strong> the parasite.<br />
