<strong>of</strong> (a) the enormous absorptive capacity <strong>of</strong> the small bowel (Hill, 1990) <strong>and</strong>, (b)<br />

fewer parasites were isolated <strong>in</strong> some patients with marked symptoms (Wolfe,<br />

1979). However, Buret (1994) recently stated that the parasite burden contributes<br />

to the pathology <strong>of</strong> <strong>giardia</strong>sis.<br />

Production <strong>of</strong> diarrhoea has been ascribed to bacterial overgrowth <strong>and</strong> bile salt<br />

deconjugation, which is common <strong>in</strong> <strong>giardia</strong>sis (T<strong>and</strong>on et al., 1977). On the<br />

contrary, Nash <strong>and</strong> colleagues (1987) found that bacterial overgrowth was not<br />

associated with symptomatic <strong>giardia</strong>sis <strong>in</strong> studies <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>fected human volunteers.<br />

Saha <strong>and</strong> Ghosh (1977) reported superficial <strong>in</strong>vasion <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>test<strong>in</strong>al mucosa <strong>in</strong><br />

human <strong>in</strong>fection which was associated with steatorrhoea; however, contradictory<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs were reported by Owen <strong>and</strong> co-workers (1979) <strong>in</strong> their observations <strong>of</strong><br />

mur<strong>in</strong>e <strong>giardia</strong>sis. They reported that "<strong>in</strong> animals with <strong>in</strong>tact epithelium, Giardia are<br />

rare beneath the surface <strong>and</strong> that penetration probably occurs when trophozoites,<br />

r<strong>and</strong>omly mov<strong>in</strong>g forward, enter disruptions <strong>in</strong> the epithelium or cavities left by<br />

desquamat<strong>in</strong>g cells." A recent f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g by Nash <strong>and</strong> Mowatt (1993) <strong>in</strong>dicated that<br />

the variant-specific cyste<strong>in</strong>e-rich surface prote<strong>in</strong>s have a high aff<strong>in</strong>ity for certa<strong>in</strong><br />

metals, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g z<strong>in</strong>c. These prote<strong>in</strong>s then can act as a "z<strong>in</strong>c s<strong>in</strong>k" <strong>in</strong> which the<br />

cations are trapped (on the surface <strong>of</strong> the trophozoites) <strong>and</strong> thus rendered<br />

unavailable for digestion <strong>and</strong> absorption functions. They proposed that<br />

malabsorption could be caused by z<strong>in</strong>c deficiency result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>hibition <strong>of</strong> all z<strong>in</strong>cdependant<br />

enzymes.<br />

Roberts-Thompson (1993) affirmed that the reasons for the development <strong>of</strong><br />

diarrhoea result<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>in</strong>fection with Giardia species rema<strong>in</strong> unclear. However,<br />
