The course offers students an introduction to and detailed
study of American Poetry from Whitman to the present,
exploring themes such as genre and verse form, tradition
and modernity, the search for an American language, and
meanings of Modernism and Post-Modernism in American
Poetry
The course provides students with a detailed introduction to
and study of selected poetry by poets from Whitman to the
present. Poems will be considered in relation to their
historical, social and cultural contexts, and the course will
also provide students with the opportunity to develop further
their skills of close reading and critical analysis of poetry.
