Objectives
This course aims to:
• familiarise students with the basic steps of academic
writing which will help them learn generating ideas
and organising these ideas in paragraphs which will
later enable them to construct well structured essays.
• introduce various paragraph types that are used in
writing assignments and essays.
Syllabus
• Pre-writing techniques (brainstorming methodstopic
sentence/controlling idea-unity/coherence)
• Paragraph Writing
• Descriptive paragraph
• Narrative paragraph
• Expository paragraph
• Cause/Effect paragraph
• Compare/Contrast paragraph
Intended Learning Outcomes By the end of the course, students are expected to write well
organised and structured paragraphs as a starting point of
writing essays.
Learning/ Teaching Methods Providing ‘model’ paragraphs taken from various resources,
analysing and discussing the writing process of each kind of
paragraph, and designing a variety of group, pair and
individual writing tasks.
