Experimental and Modelling Investigations of Structure-Property Relations in Nano-Reinforced Cellular Materials
K.U.Leuven
Abstract: The objective of the proposed PhD work is to develop a hierarchical model of cellular polymeric nano-composites. The model will account
for three structural levels of the material hierarchy, namely a meso-level (thelevel of cell clusters), a micro-level (the level of a cell wall material) and
a nano-lelvel (the level of nano-fillers in a polymeric matrix). The ultimate goal is to predict mechanical properties of these novel nano-composites
and to explore novel mechanisms of deformation and failure. Opposed to the standard #step-by-step# homogenization methods, this PhD project
will follow a novel modelling approach, which will treat two structural levels of the material simultaneously. Such an approach will give an
opportunity to investigate the presence of synergetic effects resulted from interaction between hierarchical levels. The model may also be used to
optimise material performance and to guide further developments of new cellular nano-composites. This PhD research is funded by t
Feasibility study on the usability of Raman spectroscopy concerning the adhesion of rubber on steel cord.
Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Abstract: The research institute 'VUB' and the 'Bekaert nv' have entered into a service-agreement concerning the project' Feasibility study on the
usability of Raman spectroscopy concerning the adhesion of rubber on steel cord. '. The research results can be transferred to the company, there
can be a reasonable return in case of commercialisation or there is another kind of agreement on intellectual property, as outlined in the concluded
agreement.
Reconstruction of medical tomographic images with sparsity priors
Ghent University
Abstract: The aim of the project is to develop novel techniques for reconstructing medical image from projection data. We will concentrate on
methods beased on the concept of statistical modeling with sparsity priors. We will apply the methods on microwave tomography and CT imagery.
Fundamental investigations on spider mite resistance mechanisms with special reference to modified target-sites by
employing in vitro mutagenesis
Ghent University
Abstract: Resistance research within the Acari has been seriously impeded by the lack of elucidated molecular target-sites and the availability of
sequence data in general. Although there is a consensus on the mode of action of most acaricides (Knowles 1997, IRAC Mode of Action
Classification version 6.1, August 2008) the molecular target-sites of these chemically very diverse compounds is often not known. There is
currently no molecular information at all on the importance of metabolic resistance, although it has been shown in insects to cause multi-resistant
phenotypes, which are especially frequently encountered in spider mite populations. In this light, the ongoing effort to sequence and annotate the
complete genome of T. urticae, combined with large EST data analysis and the development of whole genome expression microarrays (USA
Department of Energy, Joint Genome Insitute, http://www.jgi.doe.gov/sequencing/why/CSP2007/-spidermite.html) will give an unprecedented
impetus to many research fields in acarology and beyond, including toxicology and resistance research.
The Laboratory of Agrozoology is involved in the annotation of resistance genes of the spider mite genome. The main focus of this project is to fully
exploit the possibilities of the genome sequence for understanding resistance mechanisms.
