Conference: The novel of the Italian Risorgimento
Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Abstract: International congres entitled « Il romanzo del Risorgimento » organised by:
- Université libre de Bruxelles
- Vrije Universiteit Brussel
- Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Bruxelles
Italian unification (Italian: il Risorgimento [risord?i?mento], meaning The Resurgence) was the political and social movement that agglomerated
different states of the Italian peninsula into the single state of Italy in the 19th century. Despite a lack of consensus on the exact dates for the
beginning and end of this period, many scholars agree that the process began in 1815 with the Congress of Vienna and the end of Napoleonic rule,
and ended in 1871 with the Franco-Prussian War[1][2]. The last città irredente however, did not join the Kingdom of Italy until after World War I.
The Conference intends to deepen, thanks to the contributions of twenty students of French, Dutch and Italian literature, in the relations between
Italian and European intellectuals of the 19th century and the different phases of the process of unification.
Production of a report on Maritime Transport Market with emphasis on ports highlighting market characteristics and
strategies.
University of Antwerp
Abstract: The aim of this contribution is to identify and analyze a number of critical issues in the port and maritime business for the future decades.
It is clear that the sector is facing a number of big challenges, emanating from worldwide economic changes, social evolutions and environmental
awareness. These changes stem from inside as well as from outside the sector. It is important to get grip on what these changing characteristics
are, how structural they are, how important their impact is, and what factors are causing or triggering them.
Research in the frame of this paper has led to six future key issues:
- The changing relationship between maritime and port activity and international trade
- The role of actor strategies and interests in port competitiveness
- The increasing stress on port hinterland connections
- The growing intertwinedness and integration of maritime and port-related companies
- Concessions as remaining port authority tools
- Increasing opportunities and potential of inter-port co-operation
