SILASOL: New Silicon Materials for Solar Applications
Universiteit Hasselt
Abstract: The SILASOL project focuses on new silicon-based materials for PV applications: by changing the shape of the silicon material (thinner
wafers, quantum effects), or the synthesis method (CVD, mechanical cleavage),
the new Si material acquires specific properties (bandgap, crystallinity) that can be used advantageously for PV applications, or that require specific
care to be used as a base material for solar cell. This project targets all the specific technologies to be developed for these photovoltaic materials of
the future.
The consortium is chosen to benefit from the strong synergies between the major research institutes in Flanders.
Agreement between LSM and AUHL and the Association KUL concerning the project ' academic engineering education'.
Universiteit Hasselt
Abstract: Because of the changes in higher education , the education of engineers in Limburg at Xios Hogeschool Limburg and Katholieke
Hogeschool Limburg are under pressure. On the one hand there is the rationalisation movement and on the other hand the academisation of the
four year programs at the university colleges. In order to cope with all of this and to put this engineer program, which is extremely important for the
Limburg economy, firmly on the map, an association transcending cooperation is introduced and the various engineer programs are integrated in
one common association faculty.Accreditation as an academic program depends primarily on the quantity and quality of the research base. By the
momentum of the LSM project financing, the research expansion is launched. Besides Xios and KHLim, Hasselt University and KULeuven are also
partners in this LSM-project.
Statistical Relational Learning of Natural Language.
University of Antwerp
Abstract: This project wants to investigate how techniques of statistical relational learning can be used for natural language processing. The focus
will be on challenging natural langauge processing tasks, such as semantic role labeling, where syntac and semantic depedencies, structured and
unstructured data, local and global models, and probabilistic and logical information must be combined with one another. For what concerns
statistical relational learning, the emphasis will lie on probabilistic extensions of the programming language Prolog. The project does not only aim at
obtaining improved natural language processing techniques but also better algorithms and systems for statistical relational learning.
