Documenting ash fallout from the Eyjafjallajökull eruption in Belgium<br />

Abstract: The ash cloud produced by the eruption <strong>of</strong> Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland is impacting air traffic all over Europe in an unprecedented<br />

manner. For the first time in the last century volcanic ash fallout affects Belgium disrupting air traffic and generating huge financial costs for both<br />

the private and public sectors. Belgian earth scientists with long-established experience in this field propose to document this unique volcanic event<br />

that <strong>of</strong>fers the opportunity to portray the dispersion <strong>of</strong> ash over our country and to study the characteristics <strong>of</strong> the ash. Such a study is critical to<br />

inscribe Belgian scientific research within international efforts that are developing to study the catastrophic impact <strong>of</strong> this eruption.<br />
