Abstract: Health care has been a very fruitful domain of research for combinatorial problems. Well known examples are e.g. nurse rostering and
operation room scheduling. In this doctoral research the focus will be on finding strategies for solving structured combinatorial problems in health
care.Structured combinatorial problems are problems that combine characteristics of different combinatorial problems. One example is the home
care scheduling problem, where a set of caregivers visit patients' homes for treatment. This problem contains elements of both vehicle routing
(visiting patients within a certain time window) and rostering (assigning skilled caregivers to patients). Few work has been done on solving such
structured combinatorial problems. One interesting avenue that will be lookedat in this doctoral research is the decomposition of such problems
intotractable subproblems.
Interfacial Adhesion in Natural and Synthetic Fibre Composites, a Physical-Chemical-Mechanical Approach
K.U.Leuven
Abstract: The proposed work will tie in with ongoing research projects in the Composite Materials Group at KULeuven, in particular with the
cooperative project with Vietnam (Belspo) and Columbia. This project focuses on coconut and bamboo fibres.
The research will encompass the following aspects:
- Processing research to convert fibre feedstock into a suitable form for typical composite processes (particularly thermoset resin infusion and
thermoplastic compression moulding, possibly thermoset prepregging), particularly by modifying textile processing technology.
- Fibre (or matrix) treatments or modifications based on an understanding of the physical chemistry fibres and matrices with the aim to control
interfacial adhesion.
