UNISA CENTRE FOR LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES AIMS OF THE CENTRE . To promote a better informed interest in and a greater awareness of Latin America within the private and public sectors in South Africa. . To foster understanding and strengthen ties between South Africa and these nations. . To provide interested persons with specific information on Latin American politics, economics, life and culture. ORGANIZATION AND STAFF OF THE CENTRE The Centre is multidisciplinary and is supervised by an Advisory Committee and a Working Committee. The Head of the Centre is Mrs ZeÂ lia Roelofse-Campbell who is also Chief Executive Officer and chairperson of the Working Committee. The chairperson of the Advisory Committee is Prof Cathy Maree (professor of Spanish). The Chief Administrative Officer is Mrs Moetsie du Plessis. The committees comprise members of the University's Management Committee, representatives of the faculties of Arts, of Law and of the Economic and Management Sciences, as well as representatives of the donors. Membership is open to all who have a serious interest in Latin American affairs. Subscriptions are available for donor members (corporate, institutional or individual), corporate, institutional and individual members. ACTIVITIES Conferences, seminars and workshops on specific topics or countries on a regular basis or on demand. Lectures by authoritative figures from Latin America, South Africa and elsewhere on a regular basis. An information centre and reading room for the use of members. Research, both long- and short-term projects, on relevant subjects. Contract work undertaken on demand (eg surveys, briefings, market research or collection of information on specific areas) at agreed fees. Services such as translations and interpreting by professionals at agreed fees. Promotion of trade relations and goodwill between companies in South Africa and Latin America. Cultural activities, such as art exhibitions of films, musical and other material. A publication (Unisa Latin American Report) issued biannually; also other publications eg monographs and conference proceedings. Maintaining external contacts and exchange activities including meetings with foreign visitors from Latin America. Maintaining relations with other independent institutes, centres and universities in Latin America and elsewhere to facilitate the exchange of publications, information and visits. Maintaining correspondence with designated representatives (correspondents) in situ in various countries and important cities in Latin America and elsewhere.
