the Bodhicarvatra was among the texts Lama Tenpa studied in shedra while earning his crya<br />

degree.<br />

In Lama Tenpa’s view, the goal <strong>of</strong> analytical meditation is to enable the practitioner to wake<br />

up from confusion. In order to do so, the practitioner must understand that this confusion is the result<br />

<strong>of</strong> thoughts that have taken on weight and solidity. Through analytical meditation, the practitioner<br />

examines these solidied thoughts in order to come to the realization that they are not actually solid<br />

at all, and that they are not the reliable guides they seem to be. In the technical language <strong>of</strong> analytical<br />

meditation, these thoughts are the object <strong>of</strong> negation <strong>of</strong> the analysis. Analytical meditation is always<br />

targeted toward a specic object <strong>of</strong> negation: the practitioner performs analysis not to determine<br />

the nature <strong>of</strong> reality, but to let go <strong>of</strong> a particular incorrect thought.<br />

In the process <strong>of</strong> analytical meditation, thoughts seem to proliferate, but these thoughts<br />

are lighter, less monolithic than the solidied confusion mentioned above, and therefore they are<br />

easier to see through. Eventually the practitioner no longer believes the solidied thought, and can<br />

relinquish it. This process <strong>of</strong> relinquishing confusion in the form <strong>of</strong> solidied thoughts is understood<br />

to be the path to liberation. Eventually the practitioner may arrive at a state free from clinging to<br />

any thought or view.<br />

I assumed that in the course <strong>of</strong> the semester we would follow the sequence <strong>of</strong> analyses found<br />

in Pawo Rinpoche’s commentary. But as we progressed, Lama Tenpa presented me with analyses<br />

that diverged quite a bit from those found in Pawo Rinpoche’s commentary. He added the following<br />

practices and analyses:<br />

• Experience feelings without associating them with “Me” 58<br />

• Analyze “permanent” and “self.” What is your view <strong>of</strong> permanence? What is your view<br />

<strong>of</strong> a Self? Does this view cause you any suffering? 59<br />

• Can you imagine something that your mind can’t think <strong>of</strong> that might not be impermanent? 60<br />

• Does a Generally Characterized Phenomenon have any inherent characteristics? 61<br />

(This analysis refers to the prama teachings <strong>of</strong> Dignaga and Dharmakirti, which I had<br />

previously studied with Lama Tenpa.)<br />

• What is the source <strong>of</strong> your most disturbing emotion (klesha)? 62<br />

• How does “best” exist? (This question is a response to my discovery that my greatest<br />

klesha involves a fear <strong>of</strong> not having “the best” experience.) Is “best” separate from<br />

the experiencer? 63<br />

• What exactly is the Self <strong>of</strong> Phenomena (the object <strong>of</strong> negation <strong>of</strong> the second turning)? 64<br />

I found these instructions very helpful and illuminating (particularly the exploration <strong>of</strong><br />

the nature <strong>of</strong> concept). But I also became somewhat concerned because we seemed to be departing<br />
