General Government Police “The mission of the Meredith Police Department is to prevent crime, preserve order and to protect the rights, lives and property of all people. We will work in partnership with our Community to identify and effectively respond to the diverse, ever-changing social neighborhood problems and needs. We will do this with respect, fairness and compassion.” This past year seemed fraught with sadness and severity. First off, after a courageous battle with cancer, we lost a devoted and long-time friend and employee, Robert A. Nichols, who passed away on June 17, 2012. Robert, or as we all called him, “Nik”, started with the Meredith Police Department on September 1,1989 as a Dispatcher and held the position of Administrative Assistant for the last several years. Watching “Nik’s” slow decline was hard on everyone and every effort was made to keep his and our work space as positive as possible. He will be sorely missed. Robert Nichols, or “Nik”, as everyone here called him was our April Fool’s Boy. Without fail, he strategically took vacation during his birthday week. Whether he found it humorous to deny the police department of his company on his birthday, or perhaps he was worried about birthday pranks performed on his behalf, we will never know. But, after a courageous battle with cancer, we lost a devoted and long-time friend and employee. “Nik” Robert Allan Nichols April 1, 1951 - June 17, 2012 “Nik” started with the Meredith Police Department on September 1, 1989 as a Dispatcher and held the position of Administrative Assistant for the last several years. Watching his slow decline was hard on everyone and every effort was made to keep his and our work space as positive as possible. He will be sorely missed. So, in true “Nik” fashion…KNCP975, Meredith Police clear…signed, “Hiz Mark, X” Secondly, there was a drastic increase in the types and severity of emergency calls attended to; in particular, the number of Fatal Accidents and severe injury Accidents. The Meredith Police responded to a total of three (3) Fatal Accidents; One (1) of the fatalities caused a portion of NH Route 25 being shut down for almost four (4) hours with traffic detoured in order to remove debris from the roadway. Fatalities tax much of our resources. From pulling all available units on duty to handle the issue, to calling in additional personnel to handle other emergency calls , to sometimes requesting assistance from abutting agencies to help cover calls, and to utilizing other Town Departments. These emergency calls affect more than just the devastated families left behind. All the training in the world cannot ease the difficulty and strain of being efficient, professional and compassionate for emergency personnel on scene. The men and women of my department handle themselves exemplarily, on a daily shift. 2012 Accident Statistics: Fatalities: 3 Incapacitating: 10 Ejections/Entrapments: 16 Property Damage: 194 Training is and will continue to be an undeniable necessity. All of the Meredith Police Department staff attend training courses within each calendar year, in addition to their normal policing duties. 2012 Annual Report 47
