The purpose of back-sql The back-sql datastore is not meant to be used as the primary portion of the Dit, but to present data from a relational data base system such as Oracle, MySQL, PostgresSQL, etc... to LDAP enabled clients. The overhead introduced by ODBC and the mapping of the relational data model to the LDAP data model that must be performed by the relational database itself* limits the performance of back-sql. * The relational database must support stored procedures. Not all aspects of the LDAP data model (such as referrals) can be cleanly mapped onto the relational data model. Again, making backsql non-optimal as the primary portion of the Dit.
Enabling the SQL backend In order to use the SQL backend your OpenLDAP DSA (slapd) must have been build with support for SQL. This is accomplised by building with the --enable-sql option passed to the configure script. You can check and existing slapd binary for SQL support using the ldd utility to see if the executable file is linked against an odbc library. OpenLDAP SQL support requires that either the iODBC or unixODBC libraries are installed on the system.
