HCM33 THE CAN GIO BIOSPHERE RESERVE (0600-2000 Sunday, 07 November) Minimum

Participants in this FDP will have the unique opportunity to visit a local Reserve in the company of Viet Namese
students and professors from the Ho Chi Minh University of Science. Together, you will visit Can Gio Biosphere
Reserve, a coastal wetland dominated by mangrove. During the Viet Nam War, the mangrove forest was almost
completely destroyed by Agent Orange but has since been the object of intensive restoration. Today Can Gio serves
as an important wildlife refuge with remarkable biodiversity of plants, invertebrates, fish, birds, and other animals.
The group will make a ferry crossing, share meals at a Viet Namese restaurant, and plant new mangrove trees.
Benefits to Professor Wood’s students include experiencing a mangrove forest up close and adding to its value by
planting new plants. Prepare to get muddy! Please Note: Out of pocket expenses include local currency (equivalent
of USD$15) for lunch and dinner at authentic local venues along the way. Participants should wear clothing suitable
for field work (possible mangrove planting), sun protection, and shoes suitable for mud.
