residents. These well-known resettlement housing estates laid the foundation for public-housing development.
Today more spacious housing estates offer lower-income groups comfortable and well-designed homes. Visit a
social center for the elderly, a temporary housing estate, a youth center or a nursery. This trip provides the
opportunity to gain insight into how this culture is living compatibly under crowded circumstances. Participants will
witness the education policies at work and the role of familial duty in relation to the elderly, as well a glimpse into
how the elderly are treated in Hong Kong.
[FDP: FERGUSON]
Join Professor Ferguson in attending a performance of Cantonese Opera at the Sunbeam Theatre in the North
largely to staging professional, commercial Cantonese opera performances. We will cross the harbor on the
world-famous Star Ferry, in operation since 1880 and still one of the most breathtaking short ferry rides in the
world. We'll then catch a ride on the Hong Kong Island tram, in operation since 1904, all the way from Central
District to the North Point neighborhood where the Sunbeam Theatre is located.
After the performance, we will take a late night trip on the MTR subway from North Point to the Jordan station in
Kowloon to experience the late-night, open-air Temple Street Night Market. We will first proceed to the north end
of the market where we hope to observe performances by singers from a half dozen or so amateur Cantonese
Opera song clubs who set up small performance spaces late at night in the open-air market just adjacent to the Tin
Hau Temple in Yau Ma Tei district. We will then stroll south through the rest of the market, stopping to have a
late-night snack or meal at one of Hong Kong's traditional dai pai dong open-air food stalls, before returning to
the ship. . Please note: Box dinners from the ship will be provided. OOPEX includes approximately HK$30
(US$4) for public transportation plus optional snacks and purchases at the Temple Street Market. For this FDP,
participants are advised to have Hong Kong Dollars prior to arriving into Hong Kong.
