Depart the quayside and travel to Argus House in the city center, where you will gain a fascinating insight to the<br />

workings <strong>of</strong> local media in Cape Town.<br />

Founded in 1857, the Cape Argus is a daily newspaper published by Independent News & Media in Cape Town,<br />

South Africa. It is commonly referred to simply as "The Argus." Although not the first English language<br />

newspaper in Southern Africa, the Cape Argus was the first locally to use the telegraph for news gathering. As <strong>of</strong><br />

2009, the Argus had a daily readership <strong>of</strong> 359,000 and a circulation <strong>of</strong> 60,552.<br />

Independent News & Media PLC is a media organization based in Dublin, Ireland, with interests in 22 countries<br />

on four continents worldwide. The company owns over 200 print titles, more than 130 radio stations, over 100<br />

commercial websites and many billboard locations, and is a leading press player in five countries. Tony O‘Reilly,<br />

CEO until early 2009, and his family dominated the INM group <strong>of</strong> companies since 1973 (one <strong>of</strong> his sons,<br />

formerly COO, became CEO in early 2009, and two others were non-executive directors for many years),<br />

Upon arrival you will be met by a representative <strong>of</strong> Argus House, where enjoy a guided tour <strong>of</strong> the building,<br />

learning more about the process <strong>of</strong> how the news is collected, processed, and printed – from beginning to<br />

newspaper.<br />

After your tour, you will then be addressed by a senior resident journalist, to learn more about the personal<br />

perspective and experience <strong>of</strong> being a journalist in modern day South Africa. You will also have the opportunity<br />

CAP57 SUSTAINABLE ENERGY DEVELOPMENT IN SOUTH AFRICA (0900-1300 Friday, 08 October)<br />

Sustainable Energy Africa (SEA) promotes sustainable energy approaches and practices in the development <strong>of</strong> South<br />

Africa and Africa. These are achieved through research, capacity building, information dissemination, project<br />

implementation, lobbying and networking. Participants in this FDP will meet with the Director <strong>of</strong> SEA for an<br />

onboard discussion and presentation, followed by several area site visits.<br />

Following the onboard presentations, travel with the SEA staff to the Joe Slovo settlement in Cape Town. SEA is<br />

involved with monitoring, evaluation, education and raising awareness <strong>of</strong> the integration <strong>of</strong> energy efficiency in<br />

low income housing here. The energy and CO2 interventions implemented include solar water heaters, insulated<br />

ceilings, efficient lighting, ro<strong>of</strong> overhangs, orientation and densification.<br />

Next, tour the Green Building, home <strong>of</strong> SEA. The environmental challenges facing Africa are fierce. SEA is well<br />

steeped in the issues, the politics and the problems. This event is an opportunity for Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Smith‘s students to<br />

learn how politics works at the grassroots in a developing country.<br />
