A representative from the U.S. Embassy<br />

in Port Louis will present a briefing in<br />

the Union shortly after our arrival.<br />

Information regarding the current political and economic situation in Mauritius will be presented. Safety and<br />

security considerations as well as practical information on suchh items as currency exchange, postal/ /telephone<br />

service, and transportation will be discussed.<br />

Enjoy an orientation to Port Louis, the<br />

capital city with fascinating cultural diversity. See cathedrals,<br />

pagodas,<br />

mosques, Hindu temples, colonial buildings, the Champ de Mars – the oldest racetrack in the Indian Ocean region<br />

– and the famous Fort Adelaide.<br />

Next, visit the<br />

Pamplemousses Garden for a guided tour. The garden is located in the Pamplemousses District, in<br />

the northern part <strong>of</strong> Mauritius. It hosts the SSR<br />

botanical garden, or Jardin Botanique Sir Seewoosagur<br />

Ramgoolam, renamed in 1988 in honor <strong>of</strong> the first prime ministerr <strong>of</strong> Mauritius. The garden was first constructed<br />

in 1770 by Pierre Pivre who had great interest in botany. This 25-acre garden<br />

consists <strong>of</strong> 500 different species <strong>of</strong><br />

plants and flowers and features giant water lilies, a spice garden and the Talipot palm tree, which blooms when it<br />

reaches sixty years <strong>of</strong> age. You will also see the Aldabras Giant Tortoise (Geochelonee gigantea), one <strong>of</strong> the<br />

largest tortoises in the world.<br />

This tour will be focused<br />

on developing site-based sketches and drawingss <strong>of</strong> Port Louis. The visit to the<br />

Pamplemousses Garden will allow for<br />

color studies and a longer in-situ drawing session. The focus <strong>of</strong> this<br />

session will be on developing sketches as both a form<br />

<strong>of</strong> documentation and ass an experiential analysis <strong>of</strong> place.<br />

MAU02 SUGAR ADVENTURE (0900-1400 Thursday, 14 October) Minimum 16/Maximum 80 (PRICE: $48)<br />

L’Adventure du Sucre (The Sugar Adventure) is a novel site<br />

taking visitors through the fascinating<br />

world <strong>of</strong> sugar in<br />

Mauritius. This fascinating<br />

museum in the former Beau Plan<br />

sugar factory tells the story <strong>of</strong> sugar in detail, covers the<br />

history <strong>of</strong> Mauritius including slavery, the rum trade and<br />

more. The factory was founded in 1797 and only<br />

ceased<br />

working in 1999. Most <strong>of</strong> the machinery is still in place and<br />

there are also<br />

videos and<br />

interactive displays as well as<br />

quizzes for kids. At the end<br />

<strong>of</strong> the visit, you can taste<br />

four <strong>of</strong><br />

the 15 varieties <strong>of</strong> unrefined sugar, two <strong>of</strong> which were<br />

invented in Mauritius.<br />
