HKG07 CITY ORIENTATION: HISTORIC HONG KONG (1100-1745 Thursday, 11 November) Minimum
19/No Maximum (PRICE: $49)
Although Hong Kong was governed by Great Britain for decades, it retained
many traditional Chinese features. This practicum visits some of the
monuments, heritage buildings and historical sites that help give Hong Kong
its unique atmosphere. Proceed to Cat Street, once notorious for seamen’s
lodging houses, brothels and hideouts for criminals. The Man Mo Temple in
the Hollywood Road/Cat Street antique and curio area dates back to 1847 and
is the oldest temple in the city. Continue your orientation to Hong Kong with
a visit to Aberdeen, home to hundreds of people living on fishing junks,
juxtaposed against a modern high-rise community. Enjoy a sampan ride to get
a close-up look at this unusual way of life. Then take a tram ride up to
Victoria Peak for a birds-eye view of the city and harbor before taking the
funicular tram downhill. End your orientation of Hong Kong with a walking
tour that passes by some of the major historical buildings, including St. John’s
Cathedral, one of Hong Kong’s oldest Western-style buildings. Also visit the
Court of Final Appeal (Old French Mission Building), the Legislative Council
Building (Old Supreme Court) and the Museum of Tea Ware. Please note:
The order of the visits may be altered depending on traffic conditions. Box
lunches from the ship will be provided.
HKG08 HONG KONG ART WALK TOUR (1400-1700 Thursday, 11 November) Minimum 10/Maximum 37
(PRICE $22)
Hong Kong’s art and cultural landscape has recently undergone a renaissance, from the art auction rooms to the
international acclaim of local artists. Galleries are blossoming and a sense of excitement, long associated with just
the hallowed streets of downtown New York, is increasing. Local and international attention is gaining for Hong
Kong’s potential as Asia’s art capital.
The tour begins from Hollywood Road, the famous antique market, where you can find Hong Kong early artwork.
Then walk along galleries in the SOHO, Sheung Wan and Central Districts. Central is the heart of all commercial
activities in Hong Kong and most banks and multi-national companies have their offices there. Enjoy a day of
viewing art, discussing art with local gallery owners, and listening to talks about art and artwork.
HKG09 STREET MARKETS OF HONG KONG (1400-2200 Thursday, 11 November) Minimum 20/
Maximum 30 (PRICE: $28 + OOPEX)
[FDP: KOBERT]
This practicum will give students a chance to explore the city and observe and greet locals firsthand. We will be
looking for the usual and unusual, giving Ms. Kobert’s students a good opportunity to write feature stories about
the experiences and sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and people of the city. We will begin with a ride on the Star
Ferry to Kowloon and continue across the island, on a double-decker bus, to Stanley Market. We will ride up to
Victoria Peak by motorcoach and return down via the tram. From there we will go to the Hard Rock Café in
Kowloon for dinner. Afterward, we will spend the evening at the Temple Street Market, a major night public
market in Kowloon. Please note: Out-of-pocket expenses will include local currency for ferry, peak tram, public
bus to Stanley Market (about HK$39, which equals US$5), and dinner, which will be the equivalent of US$15-20.
