SLAVE DUNGEONS<br />

Tour the infamous forts, castles and slave dungeons<br />
<strong>of</strong> Ghana, located on the coast east <strong>of</strong> Takoradi. First visit<br />
Elmina Castle, also knownn as St. George’s Castle, built by thee Portuguese in 1482. This castle was the first<br />
European structure built in<br />
Sub-Saharan<br />
Africa. Then visit the infamous Cape Coast Castle and slave dungeons.<br />
The castle was built by the Swedes in 1653 and was later takenn over by the British. Today it housess the West<br />
African Historical Museum. Participants will learn about the relationship between the Western slave traders and<br />
African tribes<br />
that participated in the highly organized Atlantic slave trade, and<br />
will have a first-hand appreciation<br />
<strong>of</strong> the tragedy<br />
<strong>of</strong> that complex trade <strong>of</strong><br />
forced immigration. Enjoy lunch in a local Ghanaian restaurant between<br />

TAK07 ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISM & POLICY IN GHANA (1030-1200 Onboard, Wednesday, 22<br />

Participants in<br />
this FDP will meet with the director and staff <strong>of</strong> Friends <strong>of</strong>f the Earth (FOE), an international<br />
environmental<br />
organizationn with operations in Africa. An onboard presentation by FOE representatives willl highlight<br />
the work <strong>of</strong> Friends <strong>of</strong> the Earth–Ghana, environmental problem and policy in<br />
Ghana, and what FOE has done to<br />
address these issues, including Ghana and the climate crisis. In addition, FOE<br />
representatives will discuss issues<br />
related to Ghana's forestry sector and the challenges it faces. <strong>Final</strong>ly, there willl be a discussion <strong>of</strong> the West African<br />
gas pipeline. The environmental challenges facing Africa are fierce. FOE Ghana is steeped in the issues, the<br />
politics and the problems. This is an<br />
opportunity<br />
to learn how politics works at the<br />
grassroots level in a<br />
developing country.<br />
TAK08 CHRISTIANITY<br />
& ISLAM IN WEST AFRICA (1030-1800 Wednesday, 22 September) Minimum<br />

Christianity and Islam are<br />
growing at phenomenal rates in Africa. We will have the opportunity to meet with<br />
faculty and students at St. Nicholas Seminary in Cape Coast, Ghana. They will speak to SAS participants about<br />
their understanding <strong>of</strong> the relationship between Christianity andd Islam, as well as why Africans are embracing<br />
these religions with such fervor. A discussion around the interpretation <strong>of</strong> scripture and Christian tradition as it<br />
applies to West African and<br />
churches in the United States and Canada will also<br />
be held. Topics include polygamy,<br />
sexuality, salvation, spirituality, social justice and outside forces that challenge the faithful in Ghana.<br />

International. Thirty years later, Habitat for Humanity’s impact is<br />
