Maximum 25 (PRICE: TBA)
[FDP: BRENEMAN]
Professor Breneman‘s students will be studying the development of higher education in post-Apartheid South
Africa, and as one of the oldest universities in the country, University of Cape Town will be a particularly
valuable site to visit. Spend the morning at the University of Cape Town in a special round-table discussion with
University leaders and faculty members. Through this conversation, participants will learn about recent challenges
and issues confronting the University, and the visit should give students a sense of the reality on the ground.
University leaders and faculty members will make presentations and spend time answering participant questions.
We will also have a chance to visit with current UCT students and learn informally from them what university life
is like.
CAP55 A DAY WITH TOWNSHIP STUDENTS: SOUTH AFRICA EDUCATION & ENVIRONMENT
PROJECT (0830-1330 Friday, 08 October) Minimum 20/Maximum 29 (PRICE: $44 + OOPEX)
[FDP: GLAZER]
The South Africa Education and Environment Project (SAEP) ―is an award-winning non-profit dedicated to serving
children and youth in the impoverished informal settlements (townships) of Cape Town through academic support
and personal development programs. SAEP helps beneficiaries realize their potential by helping them build
academic and life skills, prepare for productive employment, and contribute as leaders to South Africa's economic
and social development.‖ (www.saep.org) With students from SAEP‘s Bridging Year Programme as your guides,
spend the morning touring a local township served by SAEP.
Upon meeting together, recent high school graduates from the Bridging Year Programme will give a history of the
Cape Town townships and a brief introduction to life in the Philippi. The first stop will be a visit to the Zamukhanyo
crèche (preschool). Principal Sindiswa Tebeka (nicknamed Nobuntu) will give a brief talk on the development of her
crèche from shack to proper educational structure. The children in the crèche will serenade the SAS participants and
perhaps teach them a song. An SAEP guide will then discuss the alarming state of South African education.
We will then proceed to a local market (either in Philippi or Gugulethu). Participants will be able to see and buy
authentic township crafts. Those with daring palates can sample the local cuisine of chicken legs and sheep heads
(known as "smileys"). There may also be time to visit a local sangoma (traditional healer).
A brief township home visit will follow, including a short talk from a guide on township living conditions, with a
question-and-answer session to follow.
Next, visit the nearby Gugulethu memorials for Struggle figures Amy Biehl and the Gugulethu 7. A guide and/or
older local resident will give a firsthand account of life in Cape Town during the struggle to end apartheid.
On the high recommendation of the Bridging Year students, the group will finish with lunch at a local favorite
restaurant, Mzoli's (at your own expense).
