[FDP: MILLER]
Participants will travel to Monwabisi Park in the Khayelitsha Township, an informal settlement of nearly 20,000
people who have been living in shacks without running water, proper sanitation or roads for over 12 years. Handbuilt
by community members using nothing but sandbags and Ecobeams, the Indlovu eco-village aims ―to create an
innovative, simple and sustainable way to improve the physical, emotional and economic health of the community.‖
After the center burned to the ground in 2008, it has since been rebuilt to include a daycare center, soup kitchen,
youth center, community hall, skills training and education center, and a free health clinic that services more than
150 people a day and provides HIV/AIDS awareness. Participants will meet with the directors, tour all of the
facilities and will have free time to interview and film community members. Video journalism students will further
have an opportunity to screen some of their video projects for the community and as a way of giving back to the
center for all of their generosity and hard work, participants will be working on various volunteer projects
throughout the visit. Please note: Box lunches from the ship will be provided.
[FDP: DICKSTEIN & WHITE]
During this FDP, get an insider‘s view of the South African wine industry by touring two local vineyards. Learn
about the industry in general and the specific business practices of each vineyard, and how apartheid and global
embargos worked to hinder (or not!) industry development. During Q&A sessions, Professor Dickstein‘s students
will consider production and marketing in the South African wine industry and how it differs from other wineproducing
countries. Students in Professor White‘s Consumer Psychology class will gain an understanding of
current perceptions towards South African wines and will analyze the most effective ways to enhance/alter
consumer perceptions. Students in her Foundations of Marketing class have the opportunity to ask questions about
the wineries‘ business models and will be asked to generate their own SWOT analysis for a winery.
