CHE04 SERVICE PROJECT: DALIT WORK PROJECT (1200-1800 Friday, 22 October) Minimum<br />

Introduce yourself to India by lending a helping hand.<br />

Meet some members <strong>of</strong> the Bridge Education Services<br />

Trust, who have organized a work project in one <strong>of</strong> the<br />

poorer areas in Chennai. The Bridge Education<br />

Services Trust, which sponsors Human Rights<br />

Education Movement <strong>of</strong> India, is an agency that is<br />

dedicated to improving the conditions <strong>of</strong> the Dalits<br />

("Untouchables") in the Chennai region. This work<br />

project may involve cleaning, painting, repairing,<br />

cutting the grass, or gardening – whatever needs to be<br />

done. Be sure to bring plenty <strong>of</strong> bottled water as you<br />

will most likely be working outside.<br />

CHE06 HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IN INDIA (1230-1800 Friday, 22 October) Minimum 10/Maximum 30<br />

An overview <strong>of</strong> the public health system in India will be given. The role <strong>of</strong> private health care providers and the<br />

position <strong>of</strong> the health insurance companies in the system will be analyzed. Special reference will be made to<br />

health care provided to women and children and the rural areas. Please note: The cost <strong>of</strong> this trip is based on<br />

round-trip transportation to the healthcare facility; the overview and onsite visit is sponsored by the Indian<br />

Medical Association.<br />

CHE07 GREEN COALITION: HEALTH & ENVIRONMENT IN INDIA (1300-1700 Friday, 22 October)<br />

Founded in 2000, Green Coalition is an independent NGO that focuses on improving public health standards,<br />

protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development and ethical business. The Coalition’s policy<br />

advocacy and advocacy are rooted in principles <strong>of</strong> citizen action, ecological research, practical thinking, and<br />

empowering education. This NGO is familiar with the environmental problems facing India and the challenges <strong>of</strong><br />

dealing with these problems. Students in Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Smith’s courses and members <strong>of</strong> the shipboard community<br />

interested in such issues are invited to an onboard discussion with Tariq Hyder and staff from Green Coalition,<br />

followed by an accompanied site visit to Anjuman-E-Himayath.<br />

Begun as an educational institution in 1890, Anjuman-E-Himayath now runs separate homes serving approximately<br />

1,000 orphaned boys and girls. The children are provided with education, care, and guidance directly addressing the<br />

growth and development <strong>of</strong> this target group through high school and college. To such ends, Anjuman runs a<br />

Matriculation Higher Secondary School, which serves populations outside its own community, as well as within;<br />

and AHI Academy for Women and Himayath Industrial Training Centre for men, each <strong>of</strong> which aim to provide<br />

various types <strong>of</strong> vocational training to populations in need. Participants will then visit some <strong>of</strong> these venues and<br />

meet with participants to better understand the mission and aims <strong>of</strong> this organization and its relationship to Green<br />

Coalition.<br />
