Perched on the slopes <strong>of</strong> Signal Hill and overlooking Table Bay and Mountain is the colorful Bo-Kaap<br />

community with its cobblestone streets, legends and secrets. Walk to Cape Town‘s historical quarter and turn<br />

your focus to the extraordinary cuisine <strong>of</strong> the Cape Malay community. While shopping for ingredients to prepare<br />

a typical Cape Malay dish, discover links between history, food and religion. Enjoy an informal cooking<br />

workshop in a Bo-Kaap family restaurant, which is just below their home. Learn how to mix masala, fold<br />

samosas, and balance the flavors <strong>of</strong> Cape Malay curry, catering to both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. Share the<br />

Join Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Plasket and Michael Williams – former SAS Theatre Pr<strong>of</strong>essor and General Manager <strong>of</strong> Cape<br />

Town Opera – in attending a rehearsal <strong>of</strong> Donizetti‘s Lucia di Lammermoor, directed by Angelo Gobatto at<br />

Artscape Opera. After a brief tour <strong>of</strong> Artscape theatre complex, enjoy a brief discussion on Donizetti‘s<br />

masterpiece which will be followed by a 45-minute piano rehearsal on the opera stage. Meet some <strong>of</strong> the soloists<br />

and learn more about Cape Town Opera‘s activities. C<strong>of</strong>fee and donuts will be served.<br />

This visit will provide an excellent field opportunity for members <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Plasket's class to hear highly<br />

trained vocalists, observe a pr<strong>of</strong>essional company prepare for performance and hopefully talk with singers about<br />

their life in opera. These observations will provide a basis for reflection papers and be a key component for class<br />

presentations later in the term.<br />

CAP42 INVERDOORN GAME RESERVE (0730-1630 Thursday, 07 October) Minimum 30/Maximum 60<br />

Depart the pier for a game drive in the green oasis amidst the harsh and dry Karoo environment. Pass the wine<br />

region <strong>of</strong> Paarl while traveling through the fertile Tulbagh Valley to the deciduous fruit-growing region <strong>of</strong> Ceres,<br />

just over two hours from Cape Town. Enjoy a refreshing welcome drink upon arrival at the Inverdoorn Game<br />

Farm. With more than 10,000 hectares dedicated to conservation, the Inverdoorn Game Lodge & Safari contains<br />

more than 1,200 wild animals representing 28 different species and hundreds <strong>of</strong> species <strong>of</strong> birdlife. Africa‘s<br />

magnificent wild animals have returned to this area for the first time in over a century. During your two-hour<br />

game drive, you will have the chance to see giraffe, zebra, waterbuck, Oryx, sable antelope, kudu, impala and<br />

springbok. A large number <strong>of</strong> birds can also be seen. The reserve also runs an onsite Cheetah Rehabilitation<br />

<strong>Program</strong>. (Please note: lions and cheetahs are in an enclosure.) After your game drive, enjoy a lunch made with<br />

fresh farm produce. After an enjoyable day viewing African wildlife, return to the ship. Please note: Participants<br />

with walking difficulties or with limited mobility might find it difficult to get in and out <strong>of</strong> game vehicles. The<br />

actual game drive can become bumpy so this trip is not advisable for those with back problems. Participants<br />

should wear lightweight clothing and comfortable walking shoes and bring sunblock, sun hat, sunglasses and<br />

windbreaker<br />
