CHE39 INDIAN COLLEGE LIFE: THE INSIDE SCOOP (0930-1600 Wednesday, 27 October) Maximum<br />

Madras Christian College is one <strong>of</strong> Asia’s oldest colleges, with 5,000 students and a 365-acre campus that includes a<br />
lake and the second largest scrub jungle in Asia. Travel to the campus and pair with local students for a tour <strong>of</strong><br />
university facilities, a visit to a local food market, lunch at any one <strong>of</strong> several restaurants catering to students, and a<br />
formal reception and welcome by university <strong>of</strong>ficials. Most <strong>of</strong> your time will be spent with your student host and<br />
not as part <strong>of</strong> a larger group, so you will be free to plan your own activities together. Students will meet their<br />
chartered bus at 3:00 pm for transport back to the ship.<br />
This activity provides an excellent opportunity for students to get a firsthand look at life on an Indian college campus<br />
from a student’s perspective, and to experience authentic Southeast Indian cuisine. Students in Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Wood’s<br />
Food for Thought class to follow up discussions <strong>of</strong> Indian foods with a visit to a local food markets and restaurants<br />
under the guidance <strong>of</strong> a local college student. Please note: OOPEX include money for lunch.<br />
CHE40 GODDESSES: SCREENING & DISCUSSION WITH AN INDIAN DOCUMENTARY<br />

Still singing Jai Ho and hit with Slumdog Millionaire fever? Tamsyn Dent <strong>of</strong> the Birds Eye View suggests you can<br />
watch a deeper and more realistic portrayal <strong>of</strong> women in India by viewing Leena Manimekalai’s documentary,<br />
“Goddesses.” Not only will we be screening the multi-award winning film, the acclaimed director will be joining us<br />
for a discussion. After having worked as a television producer and trained under renowned filmmakers like<br />
Bharatiraaja, Cheran and C. Jerrold, Leena has made more than 10 award-winning short films and feature<br />
documentaries that have screened around the world. “Goddesses” was shot in and around Chennai in 2007 and tells<br />
the inspirational, real life stories <strong>of</strong> the women <strong>of</strong> Tamil Nadu and all that they have been able to achieve in the face<br />

This practicum will provide all participants not only with a behind-the-scenes look at documentary filmmaking, but<br />
also with insight into the Indian film industry and how women fit within it.<br />

During this FDP, meet representatives from Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the largest s<strong>of</strong>tware outsourcing<br />
company in India with more than 10,000 s<strong>of</strong>tware pr<strong>of</strong>essionals. Established in 1968, TCS has grown to its current<br />
position as the largest IT services firm in Asia based on its record <strong>of</strong> outstanding service, collaborative partnerships,<br />
innovation, and corporate responsibility. TCS has a major development center in Chennai with numerous<br />
interesting projects. TCS works with major U.S. corporations as well as with companies around the world. These<br />
companies are using the tools <strong>of</strong> financial management to improve their operations and pr<strong>of</strong>itability through<br />
outsourcing. TCS personnel will visit the ship and give an overview <strong>of</strong> Tata Group, which owns many businesses<br />
including Jaguar, Range Rover, and the Taj Hotels. They will explain how the s<strong>of</strong>tware development process is<br />
coordinated, how the requirements are transmitted to TCS, and how completed s<strong>of</strong>tware is sent back.<br />
