[FDP: McLEOD]
Participants of this unique FDP will enjoy an intimate look inside two local art projects which double as social
programs serving local artists. Proceed first to the workshop and gallery of African Allsorts, based in Salt River.
This social upliftment bead and wire art project was established in March 2004 by brothers Jason and David
Rosenstein, who were recently joined by Dr. Leila Rajah. Their aim is to address job creation issues and skills
development in Africa. The artists at African Allsorts are talented individuals who, through hard work, dedication
and nurturing, have honed their skills to create some of the finest bead and wire artwork in the world. The
emphasis of their work lies in attention to detail and design innovation while maintaining high standards of
quality. Since 2004 their art pieces have been exported to Europe, the United States, Australia, South Korea,
Mozambique, Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana and Namibia.
You will have the opportunity to interact with these artists and help create a small masterpiece of your own. Put
your wire and beading skills to the test under the expert tutelage of these experienced artists. The professional
finishing touches will be done by the artists while you continue your tour, and then delivered to the ship prior to
your departure.
Continue your journey to the Montebello Design
Centre. Situated in the original farm buildings of
historic Montebello, this Design Centre is hidden in the
leafy green belt of Newlands, with the Table Mountain
range towering above. The Design Centre is a
development project for previously disadvantaged
artists, which aims to create jobs in craft and promote
local design. The Centre is home to several artisan
studios, including a forge, two jewelry studios, a pottery
studio, hand weaver‘s studio, and even a greenhouse.
You will be met by a representative of the Centre for a
private tour. Here you will meet various artists in their
studios and hear how this Centre has given them the
opportunity to flourish.
Your next stop will be at the world-renowned Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, which skirt the slopes of
Devil's Peak, thus creating dramatic and stunning views. One of the world's most famous Botanical Gardens,
Kirstenbosch spreads over two square miles on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain and contains over 8,500
species of indigenous fynbos plant species. It is home to one of the six floral kingdoms of the world and can lay
claim to having more diversity of plant species in this ―small‖ area than in the entire United Kingdom! Embark on
a tour of the gardens to view the Chapungo sculptures made by Zimbabwean artists throughout the Gardens and
the Sculptures Park. Take some time here for sketching and drawing.
After your visit to Kirstenbosch, depart for a scenic drive through the beautiful suburbs of Constantia and Bishops
Court en route to the ship.
