n Move over, Woody Allen. With
Frances Ha, writer-director Noah Baumbach
(The Squid and the Whale) and
star-co-writer Greta Gerwig (Damsels in
Distress, To Rome with Love) are laying
claim to the ground Allen once reigned
over: the New York-centric quirky
romantic comedy. Gerwig, whose star
arrival has been long delayed, makes
the strongest bid for screen glory yet as
the titular character, a broke, semi-professional
dancer with a desperate plan
for success. But the daffy and insecure
Frances has a penchant for babbling
her way into corners, especially with
men. And things get worse when her
roommate kicks her out, and temporary
homelessness threatens to dampen her
perennial optimism.
