Founded in 1946 in post-war France, it has played a major role in putting a spotlight on foreign and independent cinema. It is the launching pad for the most anticipated films from the world’s best-known international filmmakers. This year’s edition will take place May 15–26 and is sure to feature many of the films that will dominate the year’s critical dialogue. Apart from the competition, the festival adds variety with specialized parallel programs designed to bring in a wider variety of films. Baz Luhrmann’s take on The Great Gatsby will open the 2013 festival, just as other studio films have done in the past outside of the official competition. The headline-grabbing section of the festival occurs in the competition, as films from all over the world compete for the top prize, the coveted Palme d’Or. The films selected for competition might arrive with a lofty reputation but have no guarantees of translating into North American box office success. The niche nature of the specialty market emphasizes the importance of marketing campaigns, screen counts, and release strategies. A $5 million gross might be otherwise overlooked as a failure in these pages but can represent a strong return across the many art-house movie theaters in the United States. Taking a look back at the last five years of the festival, we can see several different trends and varying degrees of success when competition films at Cannes are distributed in North America. STAR POWER Cannes helps Hollywood stars looking to branch out to more serious fare, but the results have been inconsistent over the past five years. Two of Brad Pitt’s weakest-grossing films at the North American box office have come out of Cannes. His presence wasn’t heavily marketed for The Tree of Life, so the film’s $13 million take can be better understood in light of director Terrence Malick’s loyal following and its multiple Academy Award nominations. Last year’s Killing Them Softly, however, was marketed with an image of the actor holding a shotgun against a black background. His name received top billing above the film’s title in the poster, but it was only able to gross $15 million domestically. The film has the dubious honor of being one of the few movies to have ever received an F audience rating from CinemaScore. Lee Daniels found critical and financial success with a difficult narrative in 2009’s Precious but was unable to hit the million-dollar mark in the domestic box office last year with Cannes competition film The Paperboy, starring Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, and Matthew McConaughey. David Cronenberg was unable to hit the same mark with Cosmopolis, starring Twilight boy wonder Robert Pattinson. This isn’t to say that stars haven’t helped propel Cannes competition titles lately. Ryan Gosling anchored the marketing for Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive, helping the film reach $35 million in North America and $76 million globally. Directors with a more accessible following for North American audiences have also fared well. Wes Anderson’s latest ensemble comedy, Moonrise Kingdom, grossed $45 million in North America.
