Peace Reigns at Student Lighting Competition IESFYI MAY 2011 Member Mentions Lighting Science Group Corp. has hired Jose Sierra as its vice president of customer satisfaction. Zumtobel has won the iF product design award 2011 for two of its products: the Panos Infinity LED downlight and the Opura free-standing luminaire (pictured). The awards recognize outstanding product design across a range of categories. More than 100 design students submitted entries to the 11 th Annual IES New York City Section Student Lighting Competition, but ultimately peace triumphed: Pratt Institute industrial design major Kevin Lee took home the grand prize for his “Peace Bomb” interpretation of this year’s theme, “Revealing Shadows.” Students were challenged to construct a three-dimensional study in any medium and show how the interaction of light, shadows and surfaces can distort or enhance one’s perception. A paper luminaire in the shape of a cold-war era bomb, Lee’s entry produces a shadow in the form of a “ban the bomb” peace symbol when illuminated from within. The jury felt “Peace Bomb” not only demonstrated originality, but realized an idea that has international and historical significance. Lee received a $2,000 cash prize and will have the opportunity to take part in the upcoming Guerilla Lighting in Beirut. Parsons The New School student Rebecca Bost won the $1,000 second place prize for her project, “Shadow Ripples in a Pond of Light.” Another Parsons’ student, Brandon Lenoir, was awarded third place and a $500 cash prize for his design “Was It a Rat I Saw?” Margaret Cabanis-Wicht, Pratt Institute; continued on p. 126 First-place winner “Peace Bomb.” “Shadow Ripples in a Pond of Light” won second palce. “Was It a Rat I Saw?” received third place.
