The Institute’s mission to serve the public interest is accomplished by supporting advances in building sciences and technologies for the purpose of improving the performance of our nation’s buildings while reducing waste and conserving energy and resources.” NIBS has a group called the Consultative Council, of which IES (that’s me) is an active member. The council was charged with identifying the high-level issues currently impacting the building community and offering findings and recommendations related to these issues. These findings are then to be submitted to the President (of the U.S.) and Congress. The initial issues identified were: • Defining high-performance and common metrics • Energy and water efficiency • Codes and standards adoption and enforcement • Sustainability • Education and training • Existing buildings Committees were formed to address each of these topics. Their individual reports were consolidated and summarized in a cover report for submission to the President and Congress. In case you were wondering what I have been doing as part of all this, in addition to being a member of the Consultative Council, I am on the Existing Buildings committee, chaired by the head of the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA). The report should have been submitted by the time you read this. Check the IES Public Policy webpage, http://www.ies. org/public-policy for the status.
