Hawai‘i’s Aquaculture Potential Expansion of Commercial Aquaculture Significant opportunity for growth exists in offshore aquaculture. n Industry expansion: 13 farms in 1976 to 100 farms in 2006, producing $40 million. 104 n Targeted sectors: n High value seafood products for local consumption and export. n Macroalgae or seaweeds for food or specialty chemicals. n Microalgae for health foods or specialty chemicals. n Production of pathogen-free broodstock and seedstock. n Marine and freshwater aquarium species for export. n Offshore and open-ocean production of fish. n Research and educational activities expected to accelerate with the rapid expansion of the industry. n Trained workforce needed in Hawai‘i and around the world. 105 U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez calls the current production in Hawai‘i’s aquaculture industry “a fraction of what it could be.” 106 Aquaculture employed approximately 942 people in 2003. 107 In 2005, fresh and saltwater production of shellfish, finfish, algae, and ornamentals produced $28.4 million, up from $22.2 million in 2001. 108 “It’s the Silicon Valley of aquaculture,” Gutierrez said following a late 2006 tour of Kona Blue Water Farms, an open-water fish farm off the Kona coast, and the second commercial open-ocean aquaculture in the state. 109 Hatchery techniques were developed via a $1.5 million federal grant from the Department of Commerce’s Advanced Technology Program. 110 The company farms kahala (amberjack) – branded as Kona Kampachi – in six pens located in 200-foot deep water, each holding 50,000 fish. Each pen equates to $1.2 million in annual sales. 111 A portion of start-up funding – in the form of a $4 million investment to build the open-ocean cage farm – came from Cornerstone Holdings, whose president is Tom McCloskey, the former head of Horizon Organic Dairy, the world’s largest organic dairy and a long-time advocate of sustainable agriculture and aquaculture. 112 Several other state waters ventures are in the planning stages. 113 28
