Our Distributed Learning Department utilizes a wide<br />

variety of educational technologies and media to provide<br />

convenient access to <strong>College</strong> programs and services.<br />

In conjunction with the <strong>College</strong>’s Computing Services<br />

Department, in cooperation with NorthwestTel and<br />

in collaboration with all of the <strong>College</strong>’s Schools, the<br />

Distributed Learning Department endeavours to make<br />

our programs and services available to you regardless of<br />

your location, schedule or other commitments.<br />

Technologies and media used by the Department include:<br />

• printed resources<br />

• computer conferencing technologies such as<br />

Adobe Connect<br />

• teleconferencing<br />

• video-conferencing<br />

• email and online Portal and Learning Management<br />

Systems available through your desktop computer,<br />

laptop and portable communications device<br />

Conferencing technologies allow you to access “real<br />

time” courses from virtually any location in <strong>Yukon</strong><br />

and several locations in northern British Columbia.<br />

Online technologies allow you to access “any day, any<br />

time” courses from anywhere in the world that has<br />

internet access. Many courses use blended approaches<br />

that combine different media and technologies to<br />

accommodate the different styles and needs of learners.<br />

Drop-in Centre<br />

The Drop-In Centre is a quiet place to study with an<br />

instructor available for tutoring in <strong>College</strong> Prep math,<br />

physics, biology, English and university level math.<br />

Schedules are available in the Drop-In Centre and at the<br />

School of Access reception area. Part-time students may<br />

also register for credit courses in <strong>College</strong> Prep English<br />

and math and Communication 192. These courses are<br />

offered through self-paced study and registration is<br />

ongoing throughout the year. People preparing to write<br />

the GED ® test may also receive support through this<br />

service.<br />

First Nations Support Services<br />

First Nations support staff are available to assist students<br />

of First Nation ancestry with transitions to college life.<br />

Our staff provides support to students dealing with<br />

issues related to funding, transportation and other student<br />

life needs. We also plan traditional First Nation cultural<br />

events including visits with Elders, seasonal celebrations,<br />

cultural development activities and other events.<br />

The Learning Assistance Centre (LAC) provides information<br />

and services to help <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>College</strong> students reach their<br />

learning potential. Students may be enrolled in full-time,<br />

part-time, distributed learning or continuing education<br />

courses. Services and reasonable accommodations are<br />

provided according to specific individual needs and based<br />

on supporting documentation but may be limited by the<br />

availability of specific resources. Applicants and students<br />

who have been identified with any type of disability or<br />

chronic condition that might affect their learning should<br />

contact the Learning Assistance Centre co-ordinator at<br />

867.668.8785 or lassist@yukoncollege.yk.ca. This should be<br />

done as early as possible in the application process. Students<br />

who suspect that they may have a disability or chronic<br />

condition that could affect their learning should also contact<br />

the co-ordinator.<br />

Personal Counselling Services<br />

Professional counsellors provide help to students<br />

with a broad range of personal issues including<br />

depression, anxiety, substance abuse, grief and loss,<br />

trauma and relationship difficulties. Counselling is<br />

available to all registered students. All counselling<br />

sessions are confidential. No information is shared with<br />

administrators, instructors, outside agencies or others<br />

unless authorized with a signed release of information<br />

by the student. Workshops and presentations are also<br />

provided to help students cope successfully with the<br />

demands of student life, to promote wellness and to build<br />

skills for lifelong success.<br />
