Program Overview<br />
The objective of this program is to<br />
provide students with:<br />
• Theoretical trade knowledge which,<br />
together with hands-on shop<br />
experience, will enable students<br />
to go on to train for employment<br />
as capable and knowledgeable<br />
apprentices and entry-level workers<br />
in the trade.<br />
• Acquisition of safety skills and<br />
awareness.<br />
• The ability to apply mathematical<br />
concepts to the heavy equipment<br />
field.<br />
Admission Requirements<br />
• Math 11 (Applications, Principles,<br />
or Pre-Calculus) and English 11;<br />
OR<br />
• Mature Student Status with<br />
acceptable scores on <strong>College</strong><br />
Assessments or the GED® test;<br />
OR<br />
• pass Level A Trades Entrance<br />
Other Requirements<br />
• good physical condition<br />
• good hand/eye co-ordination<br />
• suitable work clothes<br />
• steel-toed work shoes<br />

TDG 001: Transportation of Dangerous Goods<br />
WHMS 001: Workplace Hazard Material<br />

General Outcomes<br />
• Demonstrate competencies in<br />
job safety skills and awareness of<br />
workplace hazards.<br />
• Acquire practical hands-on<br />
experience with a variety of<br />
stationary and portable power<br />
tools.<br />
• Complete the theoretical<br />
requirements for Level 1<br />
Heavy Equipment Technician<br />
Apprenticeship programs.<br />
• Provide an opportunity to write<br />
the Heavy Equipment Technician<br />
Apprenticeship Level 1 exam.<br />
• Acquire skills and knowledge to<br />
make a successful transition to an<br />
entry-level position in the heavy<br />
equipment field.<br />
• Demonstrate the ability to apply<br />
mathematical concepts to the<br />
heavy equipment field.<br />
Graduation Requirements<br />
In order to graduate, students must<br />
successfully complete all courses in<br />
the program and maintain an overall<br />
C average (70%). Graduates of the<br />
program will receive a <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />
certificate.<br />
Students may also be offered technical<br />
credit towards a <strong>Yukon</strong> apprenticeship<br />
and the opportunity to write the Heavy<br />
Equipment Technician Level 1 (firstyear)<br />
exam.<br />
