Program Overview<br />

<strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers, in co-operation<br />

with <strong>Yukon</strong> First Nations and the<br />

University of Regina, a four-year program<br />

leading to a Bachelor of Social Work<br />

(BSW)degree. The University of Regina<br />

grants the degree and the program is<br />

accredited by the Canadian Association<br />

of Schools of Social Work. The BSW<br />

program provides students with the<br />

opportunity to acquire the knowledge,<br />

values and skills necessary to practice<br />

social work in northern and remote<br />

communities. Particular attention is given<br />

to the social needs, values and aspirations<br />

of <strong>Yukon</strong> First Nations. The program<br />

uses cultural camps and practicums<br />

to further enhance the educational<br />

experience. Students are encouraged to<br />

develop the commitment, knowledge,<br />

values, attitudes and skills required<br />

to address personal issues and assist<br />

individuals, families and communities to<br />

realize their full potential. Full- or parttime<br />

studies are possible.<br />

Admission Requirements<br />

There is one intake per year to the<br />

Bachelor of Social Work program for a<br />

limited number of seats. The complete<br />

application package must be received by<br />

the Admissions Office at <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

by March 31st, 4:30 p.m. If the date falls<br />

on a weekend or holiday, the deadline is<br />

the preceding business day. To receive<br />

The admission requirements are:<br />

• Completion of 24 universitytransferable<br />

academic credits<br />

from <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>College</strong> or another<br />

recognized institution (Note:<br />

Fulfillment of academic<br />

prerequisites does not guarantee<br />

admission as the number of<br />

students admitted is limited<br />

and students must successfully<br />

complete the application process).<br />

• Applicants must achieve a<br />

minimum of 70% in ENGL 100<br />

and ENGL 101 and an overall<br />

average of 65% for universitytransferable<br />

courses.<br />

Other Requirements<br />

• Completion of a BSW program<br />

application<br />

• A life chronology and personal<br />

statement in accordance with the<br />

guidelines provided in the BSW<br />

application.<br />

• A criminal records check(s)<br />

(criteria provided in the BSW<br />

application).<br />

• Three letters of reference.<br />

References from relatives are not<br />

accepted.<br />

Applicants who meet the above criteria<br />

may be selected for an interview. No<br />

late applications will be accepted.<br />

Students who do not meet the<br />

March deadline must re-apply for the<br />

following year’s intake.<br />

Graduation Requirements<br />

To receive a Bachelor of Social Work<br />

degree, students must:<br />

• Complete 60 credits of General<br />

University Studies (Liberal Arts/<br />

Science), including ENGL 100,<br />

ENGL 101, a choice of NOST<br />

100, 101 or 202; and achieve a<br />

minimum cumulative average of<br />

65% in GUS courses.<br />

• Complete 60 credits of Social<br />

Work studies and achieve a<br />

minimum cumulative average of<br />

70% in social work courses.<br />

Transferability<br />

Please check with the School of Health,<br />

Education and Human Services and<br />

University of Regina.<br />

Employment<br />

Social workers find employment in a<br />

number of areas including child and<br />

family service agencies, mental health<br />

centres, schools, services for the elderly,<br />

addictions, services for people with<br />

disabilities, corrections and human<br />

resource and advocacy groups.<br />

SW 348: Social Work Practicum I* (6 credits)<br />

SW 352: Cultural Camp** (6 credits)<br />

SW 389: Human Relations (3 credits)<br />

SW 390: Communications in Social Work Practice (3 credits)<br />

SW 414: Social Work Practice in Child Welfare (3 credits)<br />

SW 448: Social Work Practicum II** (15 credits)<br />

Social Work Electives<br />

Choose one of the following:<br />

SW 451: Introduction to Human Service<br />

Research (3 credits)<br />

SW 469: Contemporary Social Welfare Policy (3 credits)<br />

*Social Work Practicums SW 348: Social Work<br />

Practicum I and SW 448: Social Work Practicum II<br />

are fundamental to this program. The practicum<br />

experience connects classroom learning with<br />

supervised, direct practice. Practicum placements<br />

are made in government and non-government social<br />

work agencies and other helping settings.<br />

**SW 352: Cultural Camp is a unique feature of the<br />

program. It provides students with an opportunity<br />

to learn about First Nation values, philosophy,<br />

spirituality and lifestyle. Students participate in a<br />

10-day experiential camp under the direction of<br />

<strong>Yukon</strong> First Nation Elders. Cultural camp is offered<br />

every two years.<br />

NOTE 1: Required social work courses are open only<br />

to students who have been accepted into the BSW<br />

program at <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />

NOTE 2: SW 389 is a prerequisite to SW 352.<br />

NOTE 3: Eligibility for SW 348:<br />

- SW 346, SW 390 and 9 other social work credits<br />

- SW 346 and SW 390 must have a minimum<br />

70% average<br />

- Overall 70% GPA in all social work courses<br />

NOTE 4: Prerequisites for SW 347: SW 200, SW 390<br />

and SW 346.<br />

NOTE 5: Eligibility for SW 448–24 credits in social<br />

work including:<br />

- SW 347, SW 348<br />

- SW 346, SW 347 and SW 390 must have a<br />

minimum 70% average<br />

- Overall 70% GPA in all social work courses<br />

NOTE 6: Accessing a social work elective–Non-BSW<br />

students, under special circumstances, may access<br />

one (1) social work elective (either for credit or<br />

audit). Some social work electives are restricted to<br />

BSW students. Please see the BSW co-ordinator to<br />

request permission to access a social work elective.<br />
