Program Overview<br />
Combining theory and practice, the<br />
Heritage and Culture certificate (HCC)<br />
prepares students for work in the heritage<br />
and culture management field, with a<br />
specific focus on <strong>Yukon</strong> First Nations<br />
heritage and culture management.<br />
Topics covered in the HCC include the<br />
history of <strong>Yukon</strong> First Nations; public<br />
administration; archives and collections<br />
management; the preservation of<br />
traditional knowledge, language and<br />
culture; and anthropology. Students<br />
develop a foundation of professional<br />
ethics and values, self-awareness, critical<br />
thinking and an understanding of<br />
heritage issues within their communities.<br />
The HCC is available to students in the<br />
communities through distributed-learning<br />
technologies.<br />
Admission Requirements<br />
• high school graduation with English<br />
12; OR<br />
• Mature Student Status with<br />
acceptable scores on <strong>College</strong><br />
Assessments or the GED® test; OR<br />
• acceptance into a post-secondary<br />
program comparable to Heritage and<br />
Culture; OR<br />
• five years of manager-level work<br />
experience with four to five pieces<br />
of sample writing for eligibility<br />
assessment to be conducted by<br />
Liberal Arts faculty member<br />
Other Requirements<br />
• complete at least 50% of the work at<br />
<strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />
• maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 (C<br />
average)<br />

ENGL 100: English Composition (3 credits)<br />
FNGA 100: Intro to First Nations Governance<br />
and Public Administration (3 credits)<br />
FNST 140: Preservation of Traditional<br />
Knowledge (3 credits) OR LANG 140:<br />
Language and Culture Preservation<br />
(3 credits)<br />
HIST 140: History of <strong>Yukon</strong> First Nations and<br />
Self-Government (3 credits)<br />
Practicum OR Field Camp (6 credits)<br />
2 Electives (6 credits)<br />
NOTE: Excepting Multimedia Communication<br />
and Visual Arts, all School of Liberal Arts<br />
programs require completion of ENGL 100.<br />
Students are encouraged to take ENGL 100 in<br />
their first term of study. Students can enrol in<br />
ENGL 100 if they have ONE of the following:<br />
• English 12 (min. 80%); OR<br />
• Language Proficiency Index (LPI) test<br />
(min. Level 4 with 24/40 on SS, EU and<br />
RC); OR<br />
• ENGL 090: Bridging English for University<br />
(min. B)<br />
Transferability<br />
With the exception of FNST 140<br />
and FNGA 100 (transfer negotiation<br />
in progress for both), all HCC core<br />
courses are transferable to institutions<br />
affiliated with the British Columbia<br />
Council on Admissions and Transfer<br />
(BCCAT). For transfer details, visit<br />
