the inner side of the snap ring groove.<br />

Install the snap ring in the groove,<br />

then remove the push rod. Install a<br />

new cylinder end seal.<br />

7. Fabricate a vacuum piston assembly<br />

ring by cutting a 1-inch section<br />

from an old cylinder shell of<br />

correct size. Place the assembly ring<br />

(Figs. 34 and 36) on the bench and<br />

assemble the vacuum piston parts in<br />

the assembly ring, installing the larger<br />

diameter piston plate with the<br />

chamfered side of the hole up, the<br />

leather piston packing with the lip of<br />

the packing up on a 6%-inch unit<br />

and down on a 9Vi-inch unit, the seal<br />

ring, and the small diameter piston<br />

plate with the chamfered side of the<br />

hole down.<br />

8. Cut the wicking to the required<br />

length, and assemble it against the<br />

inner face of the piston packing lip.<br />

9. Position the expander ring inside<br />

the wicking, with the gripper<br />

points up and the notch at the loop<br />

end of the expander ring under the<br />

clip near the opposite end of the<br />

expander ring.<br />

10. Assemble the retainer plate<br />

with the cut-out portion over the loop<br />

of the expander ring.<br />

11. On a 6% -inch unit, assemble<br />

the push rod and booster piston as<br />

follows:<br />

(a). Hold the push rod in a vertical<br />

position, and assemble the flat washer<br />

over the threaded end. With the assembly<br />

ring still in position over the<br />

booster piston, guide the piston assembly<br />

over the push rod. Secure the<br />

booster piston to the push rod with<br />

the large retaining nut.<br />

(b). Place the vacuum piston return<br />

spring over the push rod with<br />

the small end of the spring next to<br />

the vacuum piston.<br />

On a ^/i-inch unit, assemble the<br />

guide assembly, piston and push rod<br />

as follows:<br />

(a). Thread the tube nut on the<br />

guide tube to the limit of the threads<br />

(Fig. 35).<br />

(b). Assemble the reinforcing plate<br />

and seal over the threads of the<br />

guide tube. Use care not to damage<br />

the seal.<br />

(c). Position the guide tube and reinforcement<br />

plate assembly against<br />

the cylinder shell. From inside the<br />

shell, install and thread the nut onto<br />

the guide tube until it is flush with<br />

the end of the guide tube. Stake the<br />

nut securely in 2 places, and tighten<br />

the tube nut up against the reinforcing<br />

plate to insure a good seal between<br />

the guide tube and the cylinder<br />

shell.<br />

(d). Hold the guide in a vertical<br />

position and assemble the flat washer<br />

over the threaded end.<br />

(e). With the assembly ring still in<br />

position over the vacuum piston,<br />

turn the vacuum piston and assembly<br />

ring upside down, and assemble<br />

them onto the guide. To prevent<br />

damage to the seal ring, remove the<br />

larger diameter piston plate while<br />

guiding the seal ring over the<br />

threads (Fig. 34).<br />

(f). Replace the piston plate, and<br />

assemble the nut onto the guide.<br />

Tighten the nut securely, and stake<br />

the nut in 2 places. Do not remove<br />

the assembly ring until the piston is<br />

installed in the cylinder shell.<br />

(g). Clamp the hexagonal section<br />

of the guide firmly in a vise. Assemble<br />

the push rod attaching parts over<br />

the beveled end of the push rod, as<br />

shown in Fig. 33, starting with the<br />

lock ring. Use care in assembling the<br />

snap ring in the groove at the lower<br />

end of the push rod, to avoid distorting<br />

the lock ring.<br />

(h). Insert the end of the push rod<br />

in the recess at the end of the guide.<br />

Attach the push rod to the guide by<br />

<strong>com</strong>pressing the spring and inserting<br />

the lock ring in the groove of the<br />

guide. Be sure the lock ring is firmly<br />

seated in the groove of the guide.<br />

(i). Mount the vacuum piston and<br />

guide in a vise, at the hex portion of<br />

the guide. Place the vacuum piston<br />

return spring over the push rod with<br />

the small end of the spring next to<br />

the vacuum piston (Fig. 32).<br />

12. Carefully guide the push rod<br />

through the leather seal of the end<br />

plate, <strong>com</strong>press the spring, and install<br />

the hook clamps to hold the<br />

spring <strong>com</strong>pressed (Fig. 32).<br />

13. Position the hydraulic piston<br />

on the push rod and secure with the<br />

retainer pin. Slide the retainer spring<br />

over the hole in the piston to hold<br />

the retainer pin in place.
