when the house was built. They are close to, but not on, the line of
the original entrance drive
The Orangery or Summer house, previously only known in 1864 from maps
can be clearly seen, although it is displaced from the correct location
much closer to the eastern end of the House. Nothing remains of it
except the curve in the wall at the back of the Herbaceous border which
was to accommodate the Summer House. It appears to have been a typical
Orangery / Summer House of this period. A generation later it was
described as being “a handsome Conservatory 35 feet by 18 feet with
furnace and potting house in the rear 53 ”

The top of the “ha-ha”, the ornamental ditch that separates the lawn
areas around the house from the productive countryside without forming
a barrier visible from the house, is just visible in this picture, curving
from its closest approach to the house on the eastern side (where it
formed the southern side of a walk that linked the house with ornamental
areas and the distant Walled Garden) to being three times further away
from the building.
