lEN the spring <strong>of</strong> 1930 some prominent business men <strong>of</strong> Vancouver<br />
L decided that it was necessary for the city to have a stadium. Immedi<br />
ately, several U.B.C. men, seeing the advantages <strong>of</strong> a stadium on the<br />
campus, commenced to promote this project. All spring and summer<br />
they investigated and talked, and when fall came, were ready to present<br />
their ideas to the student body, and, in an enthusiastic Alma Mater<br />
meeting, were given the power to go ahead and start the campaign. A<br />
trip to Victoria was made by the President <strong>of</strong> the Alma Mater Society<br />
and the President <strong>of</strong> Men’s Athletics. The government promised to give<br />
dollar for dollar for what the students raised themselves. Something,<br />
meanwhile, seemed to affect the sentiment <strong>of</strong> the student body, because<br />
for a while after this, the whole scheme appeared to be abandoned. But,<br />
after Christmas, with renewed spirits Council revived the scheme, and<br />
supported by the vote <strong>of</strong> the students <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>, launched a<br />
monster campaign, with $20,000 the objective set, all to be raised by<br />
student effort either by personal contribution or by soliciting. Com<br />
