ALICE MARGARET SMITH<br />

The other <strong>of</strong> two, daily seen in the parking<br />

space plaintively inquiring <strong>of</strong> the casual passer-by,<br />

“Do you know anyone going in at three?” With<br />

the exception <strong>of</strong> this astonishing daily outburst,<br />

Alice is quite a retiring person—to those who don’t<br />

know her. Regularly once a year she has grown<br />

her hair and cut if <strong>of</strong>f. This year she has acquired<br />

a “bun.” Somehow, she manages high seconds and<br />

the odd first in English and Philosophy.<br />

LYLE ALLOWAY SWAIN<br />

Behold a son <strong>of</strong> New Westminster, and an em<br />

bryo pr<strong>of</strong>. Lyle is just another <strong>of</strong> those students<br />

who prefers to spend his time among the weird con<br />

traptions in the Chem. lab. to lounging in the caf.<br />

As a result he has an excellent scholastic record in<br />

his Chemistry Honours course. Among his other<br />

ests on the campus is the Chemistry Society, <strong>of</strong><br />

which he is secretary. To all by whom he is best<br />

known, Lyle is a real friend, always cheerful, smil<br />

ing, nonchalant, single.<br />

NORMA FRANCES SMITH<br />

Personality and pep characterize this small mem<br />

ber <strong>of</strong> ‘31. During her four years we have met her<br />

constantly at faculty and basketball dances, and yet<br />

she always manages to obtain brilliant essay marks.<br />

For the past two years Norma has been an active<br />

member <strong>of</strong> the Philosophy Club, but her major inter<br />

ests are in English and History. A business course a<br />

year ago did not prove sufficiently fascinating, and<br />

Norma has decided to take her place next year in the<br />

Teacher’s Training group.<br />

EDWARD JAMES SYMONS<br />

Coming to Varsity in second year as a graduate<br />

from Brentwood College, Ned entered into a changed<br />

life at the <strong>University</strong> with enthusiasm, striking a<br />

happy medium between athletic, scholastic and social<br />

activities. As might be expected English rugby has<br />

been his ruling pasiion. He played Intermediate for<br />

two years and is now a member <strong>of</strong> the Super-Varsity.<br />

Badminton has also claimed a great deal <strong>of</strong> his time<br />

and his attendance at the gym is always a welcome<br />

feature. Ned is graduating in education.<br />

ROBERTA SMYTH<br />

Roberta’s day is one perpetual pilgrimage be<br />

tween Latin, French and German dictionaries. Al<br />

though never heard to exclaim, “I simply adore<br />

Vergil!” she seems to enjoy her linguistic pursuits.<br />

When she is finally loosed upon the youth <strong>of</strong> our<br />

province, her inexhaustible patience and good humour<br />

will be very helpful to her in inculcating the indes<br />

pensable precept “the fifth foot <strong>of</strong> an hexametre is<br />

always a spondee’—or is it a dactyl?<br />
