The Medical Assisting Certificate program provides education<br />
and training for employment in physicians’ offices and group<br />
medical practices. Medical Assistants perform administrative<br />
and clinical duties. Duties may include management and<br />
maintenance of the office and treatment areas. Administrative<br />
duties include receiving patients and their family members,<br />
acting as an information and education resource for the patient,<br />
handling telephone and written communications, managing<br />
patient records, bookkeeping, filing, insurance processing,<br />
typing, appointment scheduling and managing public relations.<br />
Clinical duties include preparing the patient for treatment,<br />
preparing and sterilizing instruments, maintaining a supply<br />
inventory, obtaining specimens for diagnostic evaluation,<br />
performing EKGs, and administering medications under the<br />
direction of the physician/clinician.<br />
Program Notes: Students must have a current CPR certification<br />
at the health care provider or professional rescuer level prior to<br />
beginning clinical experience. Students must earn a grade of<br />
“C” or better in all courses required within the program. Credit<br />
will not be awarded for both a course and its modular<br />
equivalency.<br />
Admission Criteria: High school diploma or GED.<br />

the student’s educational experiences. Students must select<br />
Option 1 or Option 2.<br />

Associate in Applied Science degree or higher degree in a<br />
health science discipline from an regionally accredited<br />
institution of higher education recognized by <strong>Maricopa</strong> County<br />

The Medical Billing Program is designed to prepare individuals<br />
to process and manage third-party reimbursement in nonhospital<br />
health care settings. Physician practices, clinics,<br />
surgery centers, home health agencies, and other health care<br />
organizations, including private billing services, are all<br />
employment options.<br />
