throughout the program. Students also learn how to manage<br />
practical ethical dilemmas commonly encountered as working<br />
paralegals, including learning how to avoid the unauthorized<br />
practice of law by non-lawyers. Those students with no prior<br />
law-related experience are strongly encouraged to participate in<br />
the internship program to enhance their chances of securing<br />
employment upon graduation. Students enrolled in the Legal<br />
Assisting Program may earn a Certificate of Completion or an<br />
Associate in Applied Science degree. A Verification of Eligibility<br />
form is required to enroll in the program.<br />
The Legal Assisting Program is approved by the American Bar<br />
Association (ABA) (750 N. Lakeshore, Chicago, Illinois 60611).<br />
Program Notes: A maximum of 15 credits will be accepted as<br />
transfer credit. Transfer of legal specialty courses will be<br />
accepted only from regionally accredited institutions that were<br />
approved by the American Bar Association (ABA) at the time<br />
the courses were completed and which were completed with a<br />
grade of "B" or higher. Students must complete a minimum of 18<br />
credits in legal specialty courses as defined by the ABA. Some<br />
courses required by this program may not be valid if taken more<br />
than eight (8) years ago. Consult with the Legal Studies<br />
Program Advisor for complete information.<br />
Admission Criteria: Students wishing to enroll in the Legal<br />
Assisting Program must complete a Verification of Eligibility<br />
form to be officially accepted in the program. Contact a Legal<br />
Studies advisor.<br />
Must have current English and Reading assessment reflecting<br />
eligibility for ENG101 or ENG107 and CRE101 OR a grade of<br />
"C" or better in ENG101 First-Year Composition or equivalent<br />
and CRE101 Critical and Evaluative Reading OR permission of<br />
department. Must be high school graduate or equivalent with<br />
transcripts or equivalent on file with Admissions and Records<br />
Office to be eligible for the degree program.<br />

The Legal Assisting Program prepares students for entry-level<br />
employment in law offices. A legal assistant or paralegal, is<br />
qualified by education, training, or work experience to work for<br />
a law office, corporation, governmental agency, or other entity<br />
performing specifically delegated substantive legal work for<br />
which a lawyer is responsible. The curriculum provides<br />
students with practical legal skills enabling them to draft legal<br />
documents with minimum supervision. Students also are<br />
familiarized with fundamental concepts of substantive areas<br />
such as torts and business law. In addition, emphasis is placed<br />
on the development of effective written and oral
