Interpreter Preparation<br />

32-34 Credits<br />

This certificate program emphasizes skills in both American<br />

Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English as well as knowledge<br />

of Deaf culture, intercultural communication, ethics, laws, and<br />

professional behavior for interpreters. Both theoretical and<br />

practical training prepares students for entrance into the<br />

interpreting field, serving both deaf and hearing consumers in a<br />

variety of settings.<br />

Program Notes: Admission into the Interpreter Preparation<br />

Program is available to a limited number of applicants.<br />

Students accepted into the program begin the following fall<br />

semester. See an academic advisor for application requirements<br />

and procedures.<br />

Admission Criteria: Students must have a high school<br />

diploma, or GED, or equivalent. Students must complete<br />

program prerequisites and be accepted into the interpreting<br />

program. Application must be received by May 1 to be<br />

considered for acceptance into the interpreting program.<br />

Deaf Studies<br />

Certificate of Completion — CCL 5333<br />

42 Credits<br />

This certificate program is designed to provide students with<br />

basic sign language skills and an overview of issues related to<br />

Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals. It is primarily designed<br />

for individuals who are preparing for or are already employed<br />

in business, industry, or public service who have daily contact<br />

with the general public. This program will not prepare the<br />

individual as an interpreter; it will enhance the ability to<br />

provide services to many deaf individuals.<br />

Program Notes: G.P.A.: 3.0. Students must earn a grade of “B”<br />

or better in CRE101, (ENG101 or ENG107), SLG120 (if chosen as<br />

a Restricted Elective), SLG202, SLG203, SLG204, and SLG205.<br />

Admission Criteria: High school diploma, or GED, or<br />

equivalent.<br />
