The AVID course is designed to prepare students for success in<br />
postsecondary education. This is the beginning-level course which,<br />
when combined with AVID 2, 3 and 4, will provide support and skill<br />
development in areas specifically aligned with success in rigorous<br />
courses in the foundation content areas and in preparing students for<br />
success in college. Students in this course will also cover the<br />
Communication Applications TEKS. At the end of the school year,<br />
students will have the opportunity to receive a 0.5 credit for<br />
Communication Applications through credit by exam. A<br />
recommendation, application and interview are required. Students<br />
must be accepted into the AVID program.<br />

This course is designed to help students gain knowledge of<br />
leadership skills and an understanding of parliamentary procedure. A<br />
weekly agenda is followed during which these skills are practiced in<br />
planning and making decisions concerning numerous social and<br />
service activities organized by this governing body. The class is<br />
composed of twelve seniors and twelve junior representatives who<br />
are elected to serve from their respective Student Councils. Students<br />
can only earn 1 credit in 2 years.<br />
