Colorado is still a leading mineral producing state, and the mining industry
offers many opportunities, notwithstanding the challenges that mining
companies face. Colorado ranks 1st in the production of molybdenum,
4th in gold and 9th in coal production. This session will highlight what’s new and
exciting in Colorado mining, leading off with an update of the historic reopening
of the Climax molybdenum mine, which involved a $700 million investment
in the mine and mill, and a discussion of activities at Henderson. The health
of the coal mining industry has been the subject of much discussion, with
potential new opportunities in the export markets but considerable uncertainty
at home. While coal production in Colorado increased slightly in 2011 and again in the
industry’s future both at home and throughout the U. S. This session will attempt to
provide answers from the perspective of one of the world’s leading producers.
Speaking of leading producers, the Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company
will also discuss recently announced plans to expand and extend the mine life for an
additional ten years beyond 2016. And it’s important not to overlook silver, as the
session includes a presentation on the Rio Grande Silver project (owned and operated
by a subsidiary of Hecla Mining) in Mineral County. The afternoon will conclude with
a small miner perspective on project development in historic mining areas.
