32.1 mkfs.lustre<br />

The mkfs.lustre utility formats a disk for a <strong>Lustre</strong> service.<br />

Synopsis<br />

mkfs.lustre [options] device<br />

where is one of the following:<br />

--ost<br />

Object Storage Target (OST)<br />

--mdt<br />

Metadata Storage Target (MDT)<br />

--mgs<br />

Configuration Management Service (MGS), one per site. This service can be<br />

combined with one --mdt service by specifying both types.<br />

Description<br />

mkfs.lustre is used to format a disk device for use as part of a <strong>Lustre</strong> filesystem.<br />

After formatting, a disk can be mounted to start the <strong>Lustre</strong> service defined by this<br />

command.<br />

Option<br />

Description<br />

--backfstype=fstype<br />

Forces a particular format for the backing filesystem (such as ext3,<br />

ldiskfs).<br />

--comment=comment<br />

Sets a user comment about this disk, ignored by <strong>Lustre</strong>.<br />

--device-size=KB<br />

Sets the device size for loop and non-loop devices.<br />

--dryrun<br />

Only prints what would be done; it does not affect the disk.<br />
