Introduction<br />
This document provides data collection <strong>and</strong> operational protocols <strong>for</strong> acoustical surveys of<br />
Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) at the Northeast <strong>Fisheries</strong> Science Center (NEFSC).<br />
This document is arranged as follows. Center-specific background is given to provide<br />
in<strong>for</strong>mation on NEFSC personnel <strong>and</strong> general support. Five general categories are defined:<br />
system calibration <strong>and</strong> per<strong>for</strong>mance, acoustical backscattering measurements, target strength,<br />
acoustical-biological conversions, <strong>and</strong> sampling (survey) design. Acoustical background <strong>and</strong><br />
general in<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>for</strong> each section <strong>and</strong> the topics “Definition & Importance”, “Error”, <strong>and</strong><br />
“Considerations” are given in the acoustics National Protocol <strong>and</strong> are not repeated here. The<br />
Methods section details specific methods <strong>for</strong> each of these categories.<br />
